I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Funny Business is the story of Artie and Marie and their adventures in book publishing. Artie is a cop that moonlights as a romance author named Desiree Robb. One night after work, Artie decides to check his sales on Amazon. Much to his surprise, he’s sold a ton of copies of his book. Within in the next two months his book sells over a million copies on Amazon. Little does Artie know, his book became a bestseller because of a mob scheme by a wannabe mobster, Carmine. Desiree, aka Artie, is then approached by a top publishing house looking to publish and distribute the book. The only problem, Desiree needs to make public appearances. Artie decides to ask Marie, his mechanic and long time crush, to pose as Desiree. The rest is a rollercoaster ride as Artie and Marie try to pull off this “sock puppet” deception while becoming involved in a relationship, and Carmine tries to figure out what happened to the money from his scheme.
This book was hilarious. It had me laughing out loud. Artie is a great character. I loved that he took on the trials of writing a romance novel, not the norm for a man. His getting his “girly on” when he needed inspiration really made me laugh. I could really relate to the ups and downs of Artie and Marie’s relationship. He was clueless, and she didn‘t want anything to do with another cop. Then there’s Carmine. His attempts at being a mobster are hilarious, especially since he basically still lives with his parents. I loved that this was a light, carefree story. It was so funny, my kids were wondering why I was laughing so much while reading it. The writing really flowed and the story was easy to follow. If you’re looking for a laugh, this is the book for you.
