I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Cursed by Diamonds is the story of the journey three friends take on different paths to remove an evil mark put on Jenevier by an evil prince. Jenevier is a young woman that just lost her aunt, Marlise. While attending the life celebration for her aunt with her best friend, Jezreel, Jenevier unknowingly attracts the attention of the Prince of Wrothdem. Feeling spurned the Prince marks Jenevier with an unbreakable curse. Anyone that’s been marked by the Prince disappears, never to be seen again. At the same time that Jevevier is being marked by the Prince, she meets a man she feels an instant connection to, Alastyn. Unfortunately, the mark causes the three friends to make decisions that set them on three very different quests. Jenevier travels to a distant land to train to battle evil. Alastyn travels north in search of the elves. Jezreel turns to the dark side of witchcraft to try to help Jenevier in her own way. Will the paths of these three friends ever cross again? Will they be able to free Jenevier from the mark? Will they find their own happily ever afters?
This book is a great start to an epic new adventure. Yes, I do call it an epic. It has the feel of Tolkien or C.S. Lewis. You have new worlds to explore and new friends to meet. I loved the interactions between the characters. I was heartbroken when Jenevier decided to leave Alastyn. I was hoping throughout the book that they would get their HEA. I was also heartbroken for Alastyn, searching for the elves for ten years just to help Jenevier. He put his life on hold to help a young woman he only met once. Jezreel was a foolish young girl. She was basically told this is right and this is wrong, and she still chose the wrong path. I found Vareilious to be a fun, playful character that loved Jenevier in his own way. Finally we come to Varick. Varick was a complex character. He trained Jenevier to survive, focusing solely on the physical and not even thinking of her emotional wellbeing. He loved Jenevier and would do anything to help her be able to defeat her enemies. My heart broke again when Varick realized he broke Jenevier completely, that he made her into an emotionless robot. I was so happy when Jenevier finally was able to confront the evil Prince of Wrothdem and get free of the mark. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and easy to follow. I can’t wait to read about more of Jenevier’s adventures.
